White Rock II

The Amtrak from Washington to Vancouver goes through the city of White Rock. The rock is a remnant of the last ice age that ended some 12,000 years ago. When I look at the people mulling about the rock today, I see a long line of past people going back thousand of years. There is a reserve belonging to the Semiahmoo First Nations just down the rail line. Their ancestors are likely some of those past peoples who climbed atop the rock as children do today.
Interestingly, I just read that the Semiahmoo First Nation announced they had begun its Contaminated Soil and Waste Remediation Project on the former Semiahmoo Park site, a site leased to the City of Surrey from 1942 to 1996 for “park purposes only”.
I remember playing in that park when, as a boy, my parents took us to swim in the ocean. I didn’t know till today that I was playing in a landfill! Let’s hope the site is quickly restored to its original state.
