As simple as this photograph of two woodpeckers first seems, it is the end result of some two dozen shots taken of this baby woodpecker watching and learning from it’s parent how to collect bugs from trees.
I took the photograph while walking through Lighthouse Park. The parent first appeared, then came the child from behind the tree. The child jumped around while the parent pecked away. Only two of the 20 plus shots taken came out as the rest either had one of the two out of focus or the parent’s red head lost in a blur of pecking motion. This experience certainly gave me a much better appreciation of bird photographers.

One of the Grebe Islets in the Queen Charolette Channel surrounded by sailboats from a local resort.
I enjoy my yearly trips to Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver. I have to say, however, that I’ve yet to master the light and colour of the Park, it’s surrounding waters and islands. I tend to over-saturate the photographs but with the above picture I believe I have done a better job. For this I must thank Sean, a photographer on Vancouver Island whose work gave me some ideas on what to do. You can find her excellent work on Tumblr under the site name of Deeplovephotography (add the tumblr.com after the title to access her site).
